What’s SUP?

SUP, aka Stand Up Paddleboarding, has made quite the wave in the recreational sports market lately.  And since REI is a huge supplier of all things SUP, I decided to let the REI expert instructors show me how it’s done…

I signed up for the SUP class on REI’s Outdoor School website (take note: during the summer months these classes sell out QUICK, so get yourself scheduled soon to make sure you get a summer class date) which is often where I turn to first to book my upcoming adventures.  The one thing I’ve noticed so far this year is that all the recreational sports that are more “leisurely” and peaceful in nature (Longboarding, Paddleboarding, even camping!) are the sports that I am most drawn too.  I think in a past lifetime I was a southern California beach bunny because my interests so closely mimic this way of life with my love of VW Vanagons, Ukulele’s and always beaches and water!

Beautiful Existence SUP

My class was at Magnuson park in Seattle, which is an old Navy base that’s been redesigned into a huge recreational playground mecca with multiple sporting fields, a dog park, boating docks, a beach, kids play area and many of the buildings turned into nonprofit or sporting-related industries… our whole family decided to come out for an afternoon of fun!

To prepare, REI sent over a confirmation email days before the class stating the items you needed to prepare with such as: waterproof shoes (Teva, Merrell, etc.), energy bars, water bottle, quick-drying clothes (specifically no cotton clothes) and of course sunglasses, hats, sunscreen and other typical water-sport items.

And really, it was just as easy as booking your class, gathering your materials (remember to layer yourself) and showing up!  REI Outdoor School had all the rest taken care of and my instructors were masters at teaching all things SUP including the basics of…on board positions, basic SUP maneuvers and even how to “let go” into the water.

An interesting fact that I learned while there is that a prominent SUP paddles company, Werner, is made right here in Washington state!  I love finding out more about local companies and being able to support them with my purchase(s) too.

So if you’ve eyed this rising water-sport star, now’s the time to take a SUP class through REI’s Outdoor School and join me in the ranks of knowing What’s SUP for summer 2014 too!
