Why? I Do

A recent media article points out the obvious question about my 2013 challenge to only eat/drink Starbucks… WHY?

Well, that’s just one of the questions I get from people. Really, the curiosity ranges from the obvious like costs and weight gain to almost any other topic you can think of from store design, to menus, likes and dislikes and eventually leads to questions like “what about this?” or “what about that?” And then over the course of a conversation I see people start coming up with less questions about why and how I will complete this challenge but start suggesting and creating more and more ideas and content for my year with their own curiosities. And you know what? “VOILA” I think to myself! NOW they are getting why I do the challenges I do!

See even though there are a million reasons anybody can do anything (ego, popularity, discovery, benefit, etc.) it is those questions that leave you with more questions… those questions that eventually work your mind into breaking down the how and why of something and start becoming the “what if” and “what about that!” thoughts that I love about what I do! Life is curious… Life is unique… Life is about asking questions, no matter how small, silly or profound so that you can find out what is TRUE for YOU and sometimes see if its true for others as well.

So how can eating only one company’s products impact me, anybody? Well Mr. McDonald’s already proved that question years ago with his documentary and Mr. Subway did his take on the loosing weight portion of the food challenges too. But when I watched those guys doing their thing I asked myself “where are the WOMEN challenging themselves in the world?” “Where are the effects being shown on a woman’s culture? A woman’s family & children? A woman’s diet, weight, fashion, checkbook, community and world through challenges?” “Where is HER VOICE on how an international company is directly or indirectly impacting everything from her waistline to her bottom line and every other woman’s, man’s, child’s, societies and planets world with their presence?”

Here I say. Here is one of “her” voices in this one suburban-Seattle mothers visions, ideas, actions and reactions to questions that might seem small, trivial or misunderstood but that at least offer HER perspective!

As with most of life’s challenging questions about WHY?… things start out with reservation and hesitation, even fear, loathing, upset or ridicule. But it’s what that questioning LEADS TO… the ideas, the engagement, the creativity, the expression, the INVOLVEMENT in life that make my questions, my challenges, my voice of only eating/drinking Starbucks for a year all the more sweet. Because it is the question itself that brings us to what it is to be a woman, a mother, a blogger, a eater and drinker of only Starbucks for a year, basically… what it is to be a HUMAN.

And THAT, no matter how many times the question WHY? is asked, or by whom, or for what reason, is ALWAYS going to be your answer.

So again, WHY? am I doing this challenge? Or WHY? will I do any challenge in the future? Because I LOVE being human and I LOVE the privilege of being able to ask the question WHY? in the first place! I love the question WHY? because sometimes I find that the answer leaves me with even more questions about life… and then, my circle starts all over again and I wouldn’t want my WHY? any other way.

Thanks Linda for asking… and for everybody that is interested in asking WHY? themselves!

Let’s do lunch

Today I enrolled a few family members to join me in a Starbucks lunch at the Mercer Island store before a meeting.

I had been talking about just how wonderful I thought the Turkey Rustico Panini was for the last week so that was on the menu as well as a Roasted Tomato & Mozzarella Panini, bananas, latte’s, San Pellegrini and a nice Goat cheese and Garden veggies Bistro box!  What a lovely lunch we all had and everybody was in agreement on the Panini’s… wonderful!

This evening I tried to go back to something that I adore doing during the colder winter months… baking!  I have been hesitant to bake because I often like to “try” the goodies I make but knew with this challenge that I had to just get the temptation over with and do it!  And with today’s ultra-rainy weather I really got my mind fixed on using those browning banana’s in my pantry to make a few muffins for the kids.

S&S Banana muffins

I tried my hardest not to eat any of the baked items and instead took a couple of bites of my Starbucks Caramel Macchiato ice cream that I bought at QFC yesterday.  I will admit to you all right now that I did indeed lick the batter-covered spoon, initially it happened out of bad habit… but it happened.  I guess you can say that this was my first “Oops” moment of this year of eating/drinking only Starbucks.  All I know is that I’m gonna have to be REALLY CAREFUL when I make cookie batter in the future… but maybe if Starbucks decides to make Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough ice cream then I might not be so tempted to lick those spoons?!

What is in store…

Yesterday, for the first time since starting this challenge I went grocery shopping. I only went to one store, QFC (Quality Food Centers), but amongst all the other items I needed to pick up for the kids I looked to see what Starbucks products they sold so I knew what I could pick up in the future.

I did find a variety of drinks at the store; everything from Evolution Fresh Orange Juice and Apple-Berry+Fiber to the Double Shot energy beverages and Refreshers.20130108-011340.jpg

I did find a number of items from the VIA packets to the regular Starbucks coffee that was on sale too!

I plan on going to other markets this week to see what varieties of Starbucks items they carry and hope to find some deals to report back on!  Just look at that bag full of Starbucks!

I tried out a spoonful (gotta stay on the diet this month!) of Caramel Macchiato and boy was it YUMMY!

Weekend Wrap Up

Over the weekends of busy families, it’s not always easy for a mommy to post every little thing that goes on even though there are many things to talk about! So today is the introduction to my #WeekendWrapUp posts. Basically a small blow-by-blow of topics from Friday to Monday mornings. So here is the first Weekend Wrap Up!

1. #GoHAWKS

#GoHawks and StarbucksToday is a big day for our local Seattle Seahawks and our whole town has gone #12thMan on everybody! Including this blog with my own Starbucks version of my support. This time SUPER BOWL ALL THE WAY!!! (last time we were ROBBED!)

2. Besides the obvious that’s about to take up an entire Sunday for most Washingtonians… I would like to say that two of my newly tried dishes from Starbucks and Evolution Fresh have been so YUMMY! The Turkey Rustico Panini is going to become a staple sandwich for me, and the Quinoa-Kale-Spinach dinner (hot simmer) is just so low in calories (305 cal) and so filling that I had to have a second one this weekend!

3. My January plan to monitor my weight and possibly LOSE WEIGHT is working! Happy to report that this week I have lost 2 pounds! I didn’t hit the treadmill hard yet because of an auto-accident last year that keeps me in pain a lot with limited lifting and maneuverability most days. But the doctor does want me to get more active so hopefully the added exercise will help shed more pounds! But I do have to keep to my Jillian Michael’s app and watch those calories, no splurging on cookies and Venti Caramel Macchiatos yet!

4. GO HAWKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Introducing… Starbucks Style Saturdays!

Today was the first Saturday of my challenge year and I thought it would be a good time to introduce my #StarbucksStyleSaturday posts!  This week Linda Thomas from KIRO asked for a photo of me with a Starbucks sign in it for her story.  I’ve been running around to different stores trying to capture some fun image on Instagram to give to her and it made me think about how I wanted to do these style postings.  Basically the concept is that on Saturdays of this year-long challenge I will be showcasing a really great outfit – ensemble – style that I’ve encountered while frequenting all the Starbucks and Starbucks-inspired stores (such as Roy Street Coffee, Tazo Tea and Evolution Fresh) for viewers!

EdgeweaR LogoI came up with this integration of coffee and fashion since I used to design my own children’s environmental clothing line  (EdgeweaR) AND I am a thrift-fashion-blogger for a great local nonprofit (Lifelong Thrift) so basically I like to keep current with recent fashion trends.Lifelong Thrift FB page screen shot

Lucky for me these #StarbucksStyleSaturday posts will allow me to showcase both the challenge and Starbucks fashionistas(ers)!

I have not captured any regulars or partners yet but since Linda asked for a photo I’ll start the show with a couple of my own to get the ball rolling….

I hope you like this weekly switch from a foodie-focus to the fashion one!

The news of the day…

While I sit at my keyboard typing and eating my Evolution Fresh Crystal’s Black Beans & Greens salad I am reflecting on my first interview about my challenge.

Two years ago, while doing my Living the Goodwill Life challenge of ONLY buying everything from Goodwill (I obviously like ONLY kind of challenges!) I met a wonderful local media star, Linda Thomas from KIRO.  I actually met quite a few local media stars that year but I’ve kept up with Linda via social media and when she heard about Starbucks & Stripes Forever (my quirky little name for this years challenge) she said “talk to me about it” so I did this morning.  I know the story won’t air for a couple of days but just talking to Linda about why I’m doing this challenge really brought out a lot of the underlying points I’d like to touch on this year, namely how much our local Seattle/Washington companies and organizations do in our world!  I’m excited to see what Linda pulled from our conversation but will leave that for The News Chick blog.Linda Thomas, The News Chick

After my eventful morning I spoke to a friend’s coworker (Rebecca) about the challenge and she mentioned going up to Roy Street Coffee and checking it out.  Roy Street Coffee, Starbucks, Beautiful Existence

The store came up because Rebecca and I both have big birthday parties this year and with me only eating/drinking everything from Starbucks she thought that it might be a good place to hold my party?  I had heard about Roy Street Coffee and passed by it a ton of times but never looked further until today.  After asking some questions of the barista, checking out the rental space areas and going over the 1/2 Starbucks 1/2 not menu I decided to get the event planners contact information and see if this could be my party place?!

Funny thing, the “definitions” of my challenge parameters came up in all my conversations this morning from the interview with Linda to my conversation with Rebecca and even with the barista who pointed out the “not-Starbucks” menu items.  I’m already finding that I can diversify my palate (and my checkbook) this year if I allow myself to buy or frequent places that sell or are “inspired” from Starbucks like Costco, Whole Foods or Roy Street Coffee.  Since I have already decided that I will buy Starbucks items from other retailers (like Whole Foods and Costco) because to me the bottom line is that I’m still giving my money to Starbucks, then at this point I think Roy Street Coffee is fair game this year too!

Tea PartyNow if I can just make sure that my “theme” of a bunch of mis-matched tea sets and pots, a make believe tree & garlands, a mouse & hare (not real) and a group of Mardi-Grais-style-Seattle-Hipster-Mamas frequenting their dwellings in June will be allowed at Roy Street Coffee… then my big birthday bash might be easier to plan than I thought?!

P.S.  Linda and Rebecca… watch for those invitations!

An Evolution of a Resolution

I’ve had plenty of people tell me that “I’m gonna gain weight” when I tell them about this challenge so I’ve enlisted the help of Jillian Michaels to keep off those pounds… Well not the real woman but as good as you can get in Issaquah, her app!

Jillian Michaels app, Jillian MichaelsAs you can see I’m entering in my daily eats and drinks with the caloric count into the app but if the food is already listed then all the information like carbs, proteins, etc. comes up automatically.  But I’ve found that I’ve been entering so many Starbucks (and now Evolution Fresh) items into her app that I don’t always have time to put every bit of info in!  Hopefully the app fairies over at Jillian’s house can finish off the job for all those copy-challengers out there!  :-)

Today started out as another day exploring menus and I picked up a “Nutrition by the Cup” chart when at the Bellevue store and then an Evolution Fresh menu that included the caloric, fat, protein, fiber, sodium and carb information printed at the bottom of each item.  Between these printed charts and the Starbucks app… I should be able to lose that weight!  Or at least keep track of my intake pretty well.

When I visited my local Starbucks stores lately I have dropped off a little “hello” letter for the management and staff to let them know who I was, why I am doing this challenge and where to find me.  I figured that I’d be seeing so many partners in the next 365 that I am going to get to know everyone I can!  But when I dropped off my letter to Lina at the Evolution Fresh store tonight I was met with a wonderful response and then we started talking about me being a Raw-foodist in the past, being raised on an organic farm and Lina took it from there.  What a helpful and friendly lady she is and I even ended up leaving with a plan to do a juice-fast with her and some friends this month!

Talk about a perfect match, Evolution Fresh juice-cleansing and my weight resolutions during the Starbucks challenge.  I’m super excited to see what happens and learn more from Lina and friends!

After Lina highlighted the Evolution Fresh favorites from the different menu categories I left with tonight’s dinner and tomorrow’s breakfast & lunch options.  Tonight I tried the Kevin’s Quinoa, Kale & Squash bowl and Lina suggested making it a “hot simmer” by adding stock to the bowl.  WOW! is this ever a delicious (and low-calorie, only 375) dinner choice during these cold winter nights!  I then decided to try the Southwest Scramble and the Crystal’s Black Beans & Greens tomorrow.  Before my Evolution visit I picked up some fruit and Simply Nuts & Fruit (a great snacking option) and left feeling assured that my month of weight watching was not only going to turn out to be informative and delicious but you can also say that my evolution (trip) aided my New Year’s resolution!SS Nuts & Fruit
